A portrait isn't just what someone looks like. It's what's left after they give up trying to control how they look. There's always a moment, usually quiet, where someone stops performing and something honest comes through instead, whether they meant to show it or not. That's the moment I'm there for. Not the polished version everyone else settles for. The real one.
I take my time getting there, and I don't rush a shoot just to hit a schedule. Whatever the session calls for, formal, stripped down, or a little strange, I want the same thing every time: an image that actually looks like the person in it, not just a picture of their face. Most photographers stop at the picture. I don't.
